What is the part that needs repair, and what does it do?

Your wheels are connected to the steering wheel through a precise steering mechanism.

 

How did this part get damaged or worn on my car?  What is wrong with it?

Whenever you drive on rough surfaces, dips, and potholes (all of which are unfortunately common in Denver), you alter the steering mechanism’s alignment just a little bit.

 

What other problems can this issue cause?

Over time this misalignment causes your car to swerve to one side even when the steering wheel is upright. Besides being a pain to drive with, this causes increased wear-and-tear on your tires on one side of the car, meaning you will have to replace them sooner if you ignore the alignment problem.
