What is the part that needs repair, and what does it do?

Engine mounts are small donut-shaped cushions that absorb movement between the car’s engine and its frame.

 

How did this part get damaged or worn on my car?  What is wrong with it?

Over time the engine mounts become permanently compressed, decreasing their ability to cushion the engine and car. 

 

What other problems can this issue cause?

Compressed engine mounts make your car noisier and also increase overall wear-and-tear on the car’s engine and suspension, meaning that they increase the chance that you’ll have to fix other parts of your engine or suspension sooner.
