What is the part that needs repair, and what does it do?

Along with water, your car’s water pump circulates coolant fluid around the engine to keep its temperature cool. The coolant also serves as an anti-corrosive, to decrease the rate of wear-and-tear in the system.

 

How did this part get damaged or worn on my car?  What is wrong with it?

Over time the car’s coolant gets contaminants in it and breaks down, reducing its anti-corrosive properties.

 

What other problems can this issue cause?

Leaving expired coolant in your vehicle would accelerate wear-and-tear on the engine, since there would no longer be much protection against corrosive materials.
