What is the part that needs repair, and what does it do?

The valve cover gasket is a piece of rubber that seals the valve cover to the top of your engine. The valve cover is designed to prevent oil leakage.

 

How did this part get damaged or worn on my car?  What is wrong with it?

When the valve cover gasket cracks or tears, your engine leaks oil.

 

What other problems can this issue cause?

Oil leakage will mean more frequent oil changes and can cause an increase in wear to parts not meant to be exposed to oil. It can also cause a fire in you engine compartment.
