Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Replacement

What is the part that needs repair, and what does it do?

The ECT sensor detects the temperature of the engine coolant so it can tell the engine to run a bit hotter or cooler if it is running outside the ideal temperature range.

How did this part get damaged or worn on my car?  What is wrong with it?

ECT sensors fail from time to time, resulting in an engine running outside ideal temperature range.

What other problems can this issue cause?

An engine running outside of its ideal temperature range experiences faster wear-and-tear, decreasing the time until you next need to service your engine.
