Timing Belt Replacement

What is the part that needs repair, and what does it do?

The timing belt in your car synchronizes the movement of two kinds of shafts in car’s engine, ensuring that the engine valves allow air into the cylinders at the right time to create a smooth flow of engine power.

How did this part get damaged or worn on my car?  What is wrong with it?

The belt gets strained over time. Eventually it shows signs like stretching, tearing and worn grooves that indicate it is time to replace the belt (typically from 80k to 120k miles on the car).

What other problems can this issue cause?

If the belt snaps, you will be stranded on the road. Different parts of the engine that the belt kept separate will also begin to knock together, causing significant damage to the engine.  Since timing belts on VWs typically degrade at a similar rate to water pumps, we recommend replacing them in the same visit.
